چکیده

Lubricant oils in cars engines are essential components for reducing friction and fuel consumption. The lubrication process can be improved by including effective additives. Carbon nanostructures have been recognized as excellent additives in lubricant oils. Amongst them carbon nanotubes (CNTs) produced from carbon rich fly ash, are found to have excellent tribological properties in the sunflower base oil. In this work, these CNTs along with other micro and nanostructures produced from carbon rich fly ash are tested as lubricant additives in the 150SN base oil. The impregnated oils with these additives are evaluated to reduce the friction between two metallic surfaces using the ball-on-disk tribometer. The obtained results showed that CNTs of fly ash have significantly reduced the frictional coefficient by around 25% at a concentration of 0.1 wt%. This result is much better than that of the other fly ash micro and nanostructures produced by sonication and ball milling techniques. It is also compared with that of a commercial multiwall CNTs and is found to be superior. The friction coefficient values are investigated as a function of load and temperature. Moreover, the rheological behavior is also studied for the pure and 0.1 wt% CNTs-impregnated oil. No significant changes are observed in the viscosity of the impregnated oil. The present CNTs of carbon rich fly ash have been proved to be effective additives for the 150SN lubricant oil, and might be useful for variety of lubricants. © 2018 Published by Elsevier Editora Ltda. on behalf of Brazilian Metallurgical, Materials and Mining Association. Investigation of arsenic removal parameters by a new nano-hybrid adsorbent produced from red mud and fly ash

Two common waste materials, red mud and fly ash, were used to produce a new nano-hybrid adsorbent by heat treatment with alkali addition. The new zeolitic structure formation of the hybrid adsorbent was revealed using the BET surface area, XRD, and SEM analyses. This hybrid adsorbent was utilized to remove arsenic from synthetic and real waste waters by batch and column adsorption experiments. ...

Lubricant-Derived Ash – In-Engine Sources and Opportunities for Reduction

Diesel particulate filters (DPF) are an effective means for meeting increasingly stringent emissions regulations that limit particulate matter. Over time, ash primarily derived from metallic additives in the engine oil accumulates in DPFs. Lubricant-derived ash increases pressure drop and reduces fuel economy. After long time periods, the accumulation of ash may lead to irreversible plugging in...

Synergistic Effect of MoS2 and SiO2 Nanoparticles as Lubricant Additives for Magnesium Alloy–Steel Contacts

The tribological performances of the SiO₂/MoS₂ hybrids as lubricant additives were explored by a reciprocating ball-on-flat tribometer for AZ31 magnesium alloy/AISI 52100 bearing steel pairs. The results demonstrated that the introduction of SiO₂/MoS₂ hybrids into the base oil exhibited a significant reduction in the friction coefficient and wear volume as well as an increase in load bearing ca...

Effect of carbon black and fly ash co-fillers content on mechanical and thermal behaviors of styrene butadiene rubber compounds

Fly ash (FA) is produced as a waste byproduct during the burning process of coal in thermal power plants whose cost is primarily associated to cleaning and transportation. It possesses mechanical properties on account of its constituents like silica and alumina. The use of FA as filler in styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) was of researchers’ interest to reinforce and/or to reduce product cost. In ...
